One of my favorite sayings, is "sometimes you just gotta let a loop live." And what that means to me is that every sample doesn't need to be chopped up into a million & one pieces to make a banger. In fact, I always challenge folk to name their 5 favorite hip hop songs and bet money, that they're all loops. Now, what I learned over years of diggin with cats is that everyone has a different definition for what a loop is, myself included. Sometimes I 'll call "Mass Appeal" or "Come Clean" a loop because if I play you the original sample it doesn't take a musical genius to hear the sample & go "ohhhh, that's where Primo got that from" vs. me playing you Com's "Doinit" and asking you if you hear Rick James' "Give It To Me Baby." But with me, 9 times outta 10 when I say the word "loop" I'm thinking of just the sample without you adding anything to it on some RZA type ish or your average Roc Marciano beat. So, the other day when I was going through my hard drive, I realized I had a RACK of "loops" and decided to put together a project with some of my fave "loops" and even adding some songs that cats have spit on. So check out my "Can I Live Vol. 1" beat CD (get it? let a loop live...can I live?) and let me know what ya'll think.
