I Can't Call It: No Boys Allowed - Keri Hilson

Posted On Friday, February 11, 2011

I like Keri Hilson. But I don't think a lot of people do. I love "Pretty Girl Rock." But I don't think a lot of people do. I mess with the video for "The Way You Love Me." But I don't think a lot of people do. So why does it seem like I'm the only person in the world who likes Keri Hilson?

While I was writing this review I was trying to figure out what genre does Keri Hilson fall under? It's not Rhythm & Blues, unless the new blues is I need a man who got loot and can do me all night. And it's not like Keri is gonna "take you to church" with her vocals, so it's not soul. Nevertheless, even if we just call Keri's genre "106 & Park" music, Keri's very good at making that 106 & Park music and her new album "No Boys Allowed" is no different.

The album sets off with "Buyou" with J. Cole and has Keri making a 2010 update to TLC's "No Scrubs." "You want a ride or die chick, but you ain't got a whip, it ain't gonna happen, you don't got shit, you need a walk or die chick." Keri said in an interview "One Night Stand" her duet with Chris Brown sounds like if Jodeci and TLC did a duet and even though Chris Brown ain't no K Ci, I can see where she's coming from. "Bahm Bahm" has Keri Hilson doing her best East Flatbush, Brooklyn reggae house party impersonation and Danja's "Toy Soldier" has a STRONG Rihanna feel to it, but it still works for Keri. Cats have already heard Timbo's "Breaking Point" and ya'll already know how I feel about Chuck Harmony's Pretty Girl Rock" and Polow's "The Way You Love Me". But the sleeper on the album is the John Legend penned and Jerry Duplessis produced "All the Boys".

So, we've already established that Keri makes 106 & Park music right? So don't listen to this album expecting gut wrenching soul or music that's sonically gonna take you somewhere else, aiight? But if you're in the mood for some 106 & Park music, you can't go wrong with Keri Hilson...she's got that game on lock.

3.5 outta 5
